AI and ground battles

Mission orders give each formation a job. Weapon availability, terrain visibility, attention range and firing delays determine what it can do along the way. Ground battles also have paired formations and their own victory and retreat rules.

How far does a unit search?

The AI searches square rings of map sectors, starting nearby and stopping at the first ring with candidates. One sector is 16,384 feet across. A search reaches at most three sectors outward; each weapon then has its own selection rules.

The centre is the observing unit's sector. The highlighted outer ring shows the current radius. Sector boundaries make the acquisition area different from a circle.

Forces setting

The difficulty slider changes several rules at once. These are the ten menu settings from the executable. Acquisition also adds up to five seconds of random delay. Friendly units always use the fastest base acquisition time.

These are the original task names and the number of active missions that use each. The linked mission opens with its briefing and routes.

Tanks still fire with a negative range

The Tank Gun's maximum range is stored as −41,856 world units. Scripted ground battles bypass that envelope: the tank selects a member of the opposing formation and fires at a scattered point near it. The original engine confirms the shot, ammunition change and delayed impact for all three tank models below.

Ten minutes of battle

These runs keep the original formations moving and let the AI acquire targets, fire, retreat and resolve battles. Each starts from a fresh mission and repeats the same state sequence twice. The player stays at the starting position.

Parked aircraft still defend themselves

The four A-10s in Cyprus quickstart have routes back to the airfield, but their landing gear is never attached. The wheel models are present in the archive. Parked aircraft also release chaff or flares at incoming missiles: the original countermeasure routine checks aircraft type and timing, without checking whether they are airborne.
