# Font resources and portable exports

The [font browser](../analysis/fonts/index.html) presents all thirty DFN resources,
with an editable sample sentence, original bitmap samples and byte-labelled glyph
sheets. Each resource has downloadable TTF and WOFF2 equivalents.

`tools/build_fonts.py` reads the original indexed rasters, widths and baseline,
then traces each pixel row into square outlines. It does not replace the glyphs
with a similar modern typeface, smooth corners or invent kerning. All 223 source
slots per font are retained, including blank slots. ASCII maps to ordinary
Unicode; every original byte is also available at U+E000 plus that byte. Extended
slots are not blindly assigned a DOS code page: the source contains incomplete
and potentially custom character sets.

The files include COLR v0/CPAL colour layers and monochrome fallback outlines.
Shell colours use REGN1000.DPL; simulator colours use WORLD0.DPL with Roadrunner
cockpit palette banks. Other screens and chassis can use different colours. Fonts that differ only in their
colours remain separate resources.

The em is 1,024 units and each original pixel is 64 units, so 16 CSS pixels
reproduces original pixel size, regardless of whether the source glyph height
is 8, 10 or 18. The original baseline and advance widths are preserved. At
non-integral sizes, application rasterization may introduce antialiasing. A
minimal TrueType program prevents automatic hinting from reshaping the pixel
art, notably the small i dot.

The exporter reloads its finished TrueType data through FreeType and compares
every one of the 6,690 glyph rasters, colour layers and advance widths against
the DFN bytes. WOFF2 character maps and horizontal metrics are checked after
round-tripping. Source/export hashes and mapping details are in fonts.json;
verification.json records the checks. `--check-only` runs without writing files.

Original artwork remains attributed to Dynamix / Sierra. These are conversions
of the supplied resources, not newly designed fonts.
