# Corncob 3D reverse engineering

Research into Corncob 3D, the Personal Companion retail editions and **The Other Worlds Campaign**.

**Start with [Corncob Contemplated](https://lost-engines.github.io/corncob-contemplated/)** for an illustrated tour, interactive maps and models, and the music. The **[full research archive](https://lostengines.com/corncob/)** contains the evidence and working tools behind it.

To explore this checkout, open the **[analysis directory](analysis/index.html)**. The [resource browser](analysis/resources/index.html) works directly from disk: artwork, cockpit screens, rotatable models, theatre maps, saved campaigns, recorded flights, presentations and lossless audio. The [reading guide](docs/README.md) gives suggested routes through the reports.

For a playable reconstruction, see **[corncob-cpp](https://github.com/Lost-Engines/corncob-cpp)**. **[corncob-redux](https://github.com/Lost-Engines/corncob-redux)** adds modern controls, higher resolutions and selected fixes. Both include the original game and Other Worlds.

## Inside the archive

- [Versions and installations](analysis/versions.md) identifies duplicate downloads, distinct builds and the confusing use of “Deluxe”. The normal-game reference is [Personal Companion retail 3.42](installs/deluxe_dnk/); the expansion reference is [Other Worlds](installs/other_worlds_download/).
- [Resource formats](analysis/resource-formats.md) describes extraction and verification. [Gameplay research](analysis/gameplay.md) covers movement, weapons, enemies, objectives and campaign rules.
- [Audio exports](analysis/audio-rendering.md), [saved-state formats](analysis/state-formats.md), [model differences](analysis/model-comparison.md) and [the tower](analysis/tower.md) have their own reports.
- `installs/` retains the source installations, including our old `corncob/` save. `install media/` contains extracted floppy filesystems and installers. Redundant archives and disk images were removed after verified extraction; their hashes and member inventories remain in the [source-media record](analysis/source-media.json).
- `tools/` contains the extraction and verification scripts. [Publishing instructions](tools/publish/README.md) cover the generated web archive and `publish.sh`.

The recovered [original assembly source](analysis/original_source/) is preserved from the **Initial Import** commit of [foone/Corncob3D](https://github.com/foone/Corncob3D), before later MASM compatibility edits, without Git metadata or the uploader’s README. The [snapshot provenance](analysis/original_source.provenance.json) records the upstream commit and SHA-256 of every retained file.

Part of **[The Lost Engines Project](https://lostengines.com/)**. Original game by Kevin Stokes and George Welch / Pie in the Sky Software; original music by Jim Collymore.
